I found a thread last month that explained all the nuances of Free Experience (gold stars) and  upgrades (blue stars). I still don't quite grasp the concept, especially the blue stars and what to do with them on tanks I don't drive much anymore.

Cant find the thread. Anyone care to point me in the right direction or explain?  Thanks.

Slow, but a learner.  Haha.

Blue stars are used to upgrade modules on one specific tank. When you play in that tank, you get a certain amount of blue stars based on damage done, assistance damage, enemies spotted, etc. You can then use this to upgrade whatever modules are available, like new guns, turrets, engines, or suspension. You then earn gold stars in battle, equivalent to 5% of the amount of blue stars you receive. This is called Free Experience, and can be used on any tank to upgrade modules. Blue stars can only be used on one tank, but gold can be used on any tank. You can use gold to convert regular experience into free experience.

You earn XP from battles, and sometimes Missions.

Blue silver star, Combat XP.  This XP stays with the tank you earned it on.  This is the XP you spend on researching upgrades for that tank (better gun, engine, etc) and for researching the next tank after this tank.  Once you run out of things to research on this tank, this tank is Elite.  Any more Combat XP you earn on this tank will just accumulate, unless you choose to spend Gold to convert this tank's Combat XP into Free XP.

Gold orange XP is Free XP. When your tank earns Combat XP, you also earn 5% in the form of Free XP.  You can also get Free XP by paying Gold to convert an Elite or Premium tank's Combat XP.

Green star is Crew XP. This is XP that builds your Crew Training for this tank towards 100% trained. If your tank is 100% trained, then Crew XP will go towards Crew Skills  for that type of tank (light, med, hvy, TD). Crew skills are skills like Mentoring or Clutch Braking.

It's quite simple, actually. When you play a tank, you automatically accumulate blue stars (henceforth going to be called XP) and gold stars (henceforth called Free XP).

You gain more XP (blue) than Free XP (gold); however, you can only use XP on the said tank you accumulated the XP on (the tank you just played in battle). You use this XP to research modules.

Free XP, even though you only get a minuscule amount each battle, is 5% of the XP you gain in each battle. Free XP can be used on any tank, regardless of the tank you earned it on. It slowly adds up over time; I've been saving free XP for a couple weeks and have close to 30k free XP to spend on my completely stock Type 61

However, there is one quirk regarding free XP. If you have gold,  you can use it to "convert" regular XP on elited tanks (meaning they have all modules and the next tank(s) researched) into free XP. This is an extremely handy way of skipping painful stock grinds of tanks such as the T-44 and Centurion 1.

Ok. Thanks for all the input. That helps.

Please clarify this: I go to my garage and click on the green icon shopping cart. I click on convert experience. If I click on arrow on the middle left, all my tanks are listed. Past and present with their respective XP(blue stars). I can check each tank and the respective XP is listed to convert to gold.

What is that? Is that a good thing to do. I'm assuming so. Especially if you don't own the tank anymore.

Maybe this answers the question.  from tlouie: "Any more Combat XP you earn on this tank will just accumulate, unless you choose to spend Gold to convert this tank's Combat XP into Free XP."

Yep, that answers your question.  You can spend gold to convert the blue stars (tank XP) into green stars (Free XP).  You can then use that Free XP on ANY tank to unlock modules, or even to research new tanks.

One reason to not convert experience from a certain tank is if you think/know a future line might branch from that tank. Like recently, if you had enough extra XP on the Su-100, you would have been able to research the new SU-100m1 without replaying/repbuying the Su-100.

If I had to pick which tank to convert Combat XP, I would start with Premium tanks, cause premium tank combat XP is useless otherwise.

After all the upgrades on a specific tank, I wish blue star could convert into some usable item. Seems a waste, and I don't mean having to purchase gold.

I've got about 75k in blue stars on a premium tank panzer V/IV. Can these be used at all? If so how?

Panzerwaffe , later also Panzertruppe  (German for "Armoured Force", "Armoured Arm" or "Tank Force". Waffe :[combat] "arm")

Gold converts it to free/usable XP.

Also, sometime soon you will be able to convert it to crew XP (the green one) for crew skills training.
